Juan has spent the week with us for work experience and we asked him what he thought of working at Element. Here's what he said...…
What have you enjoyed most about your week at Element?
This week at Element I have loved everything but looking at the finance and accounts with Jordan was probably the best. It was fun, interesting and helped me lots in the overall understanding, and I look forward to taking this knowledge back to school to help me with my studies.
Is there anything that you haven’t enjoyed?
There’s nothing I haven’t enjoyed but I have found the days long and tiring. A normal school day for me is an 8:30 start and a 2:50 finish, which is a lot different to yesterday as an example, as I was sat in a meeting with a Finance Director until 6pm at which point I found it hard to concentrate.
What subjects/skills gained from school do you think would help with a career in recruitment?
I would say there are three main subjects at school that are helpful and have easily transferable skills to recruitment. Of course, business studies is helpful because you must learn important things like key terminology, the recruitment cycle and a general understanding for how business works. Also, maths, because different calculations and key terminology are used frequently throughout recruitment, so its important to have a basic understanding. Finally, English, because when writing emails, you need to be accurate with all grammar and present yourself well. Also, when speaking on the phone and in meetings, you need to show a good understanding, be confident and use the necessary language.
Was your week as you expected? Anything different/surprising?
Generally, my week was as I expected it to be, however I was surprised with how sophisticated and detailed the conversations were on the phone. The amount of questions and responses you must give felt hard, but over time I gradually got better and more confident.
Has it been useful? What have you learned?
This week has been very useful and beneficial, from learning about the payroll to talking to people on the phone, this week has been a great experience. Certainly, one I will remember, and I hope to use everything I’ve learnt to my advantage at school and many other aspects of life.
