Element Recruitment is 5 years old!!
Year 1: Worked flat out getting the business off the ground. We laughed a lot, moved office 3 times, ended the year as a team of 8 and loved every single minute of it.
Year 2: We keep going strong and double our turnover, we’re still having lots of fun and the team are amazing.
Year 3: We’re still doing well and clients and candidate are happy with us. The team has grown and we’re no longer considered a ‘start-up’. We evaluate what has worked and what hasn’t to help us in the future.
Year 4: We keep growing but are trying to learn from our mistakes, we have plans to introduce more structure and process and make better choices with our own hiring.
Year 5: Covid-19 strikes. The whole world is making things up as they go along just to get through it. We try to make the right decisions, it’s an emotional year, we learn a lot about loyalty, determination, team work and reward.
As we head into our 6th year it’s hard to imagine the day we moved into our tiny 3 person office in Whitefriars Business Centre. My Mum had bought Steve and I brand new stationery and I had a wall planner that I’d put green dots on every time we found someone a job. By the end of the first 6 months I needed a bigger planner - we had exceeded our initial forecasts hugely! As time went on, we became quite good at forecasting and predicting what we could achieve each year until early 2020, when everything was turned upside down. We had no idea what the future would hold and it was impossible to make plans as things were changing so rapidly. We tried to control the situation as best we could and make what we felt were the right decisions at the time. Some of the decisions we regret, other decisions that felt hard at the time were the right thing to do and other things that happened turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
Anyone that works with Element always comments on what a great team we have and I completely agree. Each member of the team plays their part and makes Element what it is; the team we have now have stuck with us through the tough times as well as enjoying the good times. They remained calm, professional and were patient while we tried to figure things out and as a result we have an even stronger bond and sense of team; their loyalty and commitment is something that Steve and I will never forget.
We are a sociable bunch and we’ve found it hard dealing with lockdown, but we are being sensible and following government advice by working from home. It goes without saying that we’re all very keen to return to an office as soon as it’s safe to do so! I doubt we’ll ever work 5 days a week in an office, instead we have chosen to work flexibly so those that want to work from home can do so but the ones that like being in an office also have that option. Personally I think 3 days in an office and 2 from home will be a good balance for me, I really miss the buzz of us all together in an office but I love being able to put a load of washing on when I’m working from home (sad but true!)
Usually to celebrate our anniversary, we have cake and a party. Last year we competed against each other in teams for the ‘Element Sports Day’ followed up with pizza and prosecco, but sadly we’ll have to postpone celebrating together until later in the year when it’s safe to do so. Instead, this year we’ll be on a Zoom call having a few drinks to celebrate and talking about how we plan to make up for it in the future.
Finally we wouldn’t be here without our wonderful clients and candidates who have trusted us with their recruitment and their careers. Thank you for supporting a small local business through both the good times and the not so good times, we are very grateful for your business!
Steve and I still agree that starting Element was the best decision we ever made and are excited about what the next 5 years might bring!
