Student Counsellor (University Setting) – Short‑Term Suppor (3 month contract)

We’re partnering with a leading educational provider in Bristol to hire a Student Counsellor to deliver brief, student‑focused therapy that supports wellbeing and academic success.

  • £21.93 per hour
  • Hybrid working (in the office once a fortnight)
  • 35 hour working week
  • Temporary until mid-May 2026

What you’ll do

  • Provide one‑to‑one counselling, assisted self‑help and occasional group sessions, mainly via One‑At‑A‑Time (OAAT) and up to 6‑session models (the service uses a range of modalities).
  • Assess and triage, manage risk and safeguarding concerns, and make timely onward referrals in line with service procedures and the BACP Ethical Framework (or equivalent).
  • Maintain concise, accurate clinical notes, manage your caseload within line management and clinical supervision, and use digital systems effectively (calendars, appointments, reporting, CPD).
  • Liaise with internal services and external mental health providers to coordinate support, and contribute to inductions, peer supervision, training and team meetings.
  • Champion Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) and uphold confidentiality at all times.

About you

  • Qualified counsellor/psychotherapist (BACP registered/accredited or equivalent).
  • Experience delivering brief interventions with students/young adults (HE/FE experience welcome).
  • Skilled in risk assessment, calm under pressure, and collaborative in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong record‑keeping and IT skills; committed to supervision and ongoing CPD.

You will need:

  • A minimum level 4 diploma lasting 2 years, with total training of 400 hours, and an average of 1.5 hours supervision per month, with a requirement of having attended personal therapy during the course (courses vary in length)
  • Minimum of 100 client hours post-qualified
  • Registration equivalent to one of the following: ACC registered member, BACP registered member, HGI registered member, HCPC registered member, NCS accredited registrant or UKCP Trainee Membership
  • Experience of counselling a diverse range of young people, preferably in H.E. setting 
  • Knowledge and experience of crisis management   
  • Knowledge of the needs of students with severe and enduring Mental Health conditions and associated counselling and referral issues
