Head of Payroll - Bristol

We are recruiting for a business in central Bristol who are looking for a Head of Payroll. This role comes with parking and is managing a team of 7 administrators and 1 supervisor.

The role responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Preparation and management of company payroll for circa 7,000 employees, under tight deadlines
  • Being the subject matter expert for Payroll, Pension & Employee Benefits
  • Keeping the business up to date with key payroll / pension and tax legislation changes and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation
  • Maintaining a close working relationship with HR, Finance & Operations, ensuring all parties are aware of payroll requirements and changes
  • Providing accurate financial information as requested for accounting and auditing purposes.
  • Working closely with the CFO/Heads of Finance to provide analysis/insight on employee trends and key data – including Gender Pay Gap reporting
  • Liaison and compliance with HMRC regulatory requirements including timely submission of monthly and annual returns using RTI
  • Preparation of P11D’s and submission to the HMRC set dates
  • Reporting, reconciliation and payment of 3rd party supplier payments
  • Working closely with HR department to ensure continuity of reporting and data transfer to Payroll
  • Engagement with IT department to implement new systems and processes
  • Management, maintenance and data quality responsibilities for the payroll system  
  • Critically reviewing and analysing payroll processes and procedures, recommending improvement where necessary
  • Being responsible for leading and overseeing all future payroll projects, liaising with Finance and HR where necessary
  • Managing the relationships with external brokers regarding the implementation and maintenance of all employee benefit programs including but not limited to: private medical, group life insurance, pension schemes, cycle to work scheme and childcare voucher scheme.

Applicants should either be ‘Payroll Specialists’ with 4+ years recent experience of working as a Payroll Manager or should be experienced managers who have held accountability for managing a payroll function as part of wider role, all ideally will have strong knowledge of managing payroll in a multi-site organisation.

You will need proven experience in managing an in-house payroll service, developing and enforcing payroll policies and procedures. You must have excellent attention to detail and great analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to calculate risk and take decisive action. You will need experience in leading, coaching and motivating a team. Ability to work to multiple tight deadlines in a time pressured environment is critical.
